Creamy Iced Hojicha Latte with Brown-Sugar Oat-Milk Foam

If matcha is so 2022, hojicha is the glow-up we’ve been craving. Grown in Kyoto and gently roasted for those cosy, biscuit-like notes, hojicha brings all the antioxidants with fraction-of-coffee caffeine. Perfect when you want calm focus before your 9 am Pilates or a late-night Netflix sesh.

Today we’re layering chilled hojicha over vanilla-kissed oat milk, then crowning it with a cafΓ©-style brown-sugar cold foam that tastes like melted caramel – minus the dairy. Trust us: you’ll skip the queue at Pret once you nail this at home.

Ingredients (1 large glass)

  • 2 tsp hojicha powder (or 200 ml strong-brewed loose-leaf hojicha, cooled)
  • 50 ml hot water, 80 Β°C
  • 150 ml barista oat milk, ice-cold
  • 1 tbsp soft brown sugar
  • Β½ tsp vanilla paste
  • Pinch flaky sea salt
  • Ice cubes & an optional dusting of extra powder to garnish

Simple Swaps

  • Gluten-free? Choose certified GF oat milk or sub unsweetened almond milk.
  • Sugar-free? Switch brown sugar for coconut sugar or 1 tbsp maple syrup.
  • No frother? Shake foam ingredients in a jam jar for 30 s until fluffy.
  • Extra protein? Blend Β½ scoop vanilla vegan protein into the oat milk before assembling.

Method

1. In a small bowl, whisk hojicha powder with 50 ml hot water (about 80 Β°C) forΒ 15 seconds until silky and lump-free. (Loose-leaf fans: steep 2 g leaves in 200 ml 90 Β°C water for 90 s, strain and chill.)

2. Combine oat milk, brown sugar, vanilla and sea salt in a tall jug. Froth with a handheld whisk/frother forΒ 30 seconds until soft peaks form.

3. Fill a 350 ml glass with ice. Pour your cooled hojicha over the cubes – watch that gorgeous earthy shade swirl!

4. Gently spoon the brown-sugar foam on top. Finish with aΒ tiny dusting of hojicha powder for Insta-worthy contrast. Slide in a reusable straw & enjoy immediately!
