Tasting notes

Velvety roasted cocoa, toasted hazelnut and soft caramel, with a gentle smoky finish.

Hojicha is very different from matcha. Matcha is bright, grassy and more intense; hojicha is roasted, mellow, nutty and comforting. If you love the ritual of matcha but want something smoother and lower in caffeine, hojicha is your new cosy cup.

How to make a hojicha latte

For one creamy hojicha latte:

1. Add 1–2 teaspoons of hojicha powder to a cup or bowl.

2. Add a splash of hot water, around 80–90°C.

3. Whisk into a smooth paste.

4. Add 200ml warm or iced milk. Oat milk works beautifully.

5. Sweeten with honey, maple syrup or vanilla if you like.

For a stronger roasted flavour, use 2 teaspoons. For a softer evening latte, start with 1 teaspoon.

How to use hojicha powder

Use Hojicha Lab powder for:

  • Hot hojicha lattes
  • Iced hojicha lattes
  • Hojicha overnight oats
  • Hojicha pancakes
  • Hojicha tiramisu
  • Hojicha cheesecake
  • Hojicha cookies, brownies and ice cream
  • Smoothies and protein shakes

Its roasted, caramel-like flavour pairs especially well with oat milk, vanilla, chocolate, maple syrup, brown sugar, cream and toasted nuts.

Frequently asked questions

What is hojicha powder?

Hojicha powder is Japanese green tea that has been roasted and ground into a fine powder. Roasting changes the flavour from grassy and vegetal to warm, nutty, smoky and caramel-like.

Is hojicha the same as matcha?

No. Matcha is usually bright green, grassy and more energising. Hojicha is roasted, brown, smooth, nutty and typically lower in caffeine. Many people enjoy matcha in the morning and hojicha later in the day.

Does hojicha powder have caffeine?

Yes, hojicha naturally contains caffeine. However, it is typically much lower in caffeine than coffee and matcha, making it a gentler choice for people who want a cosy drink without the coffee jitters.

What does hojicha taste like?

Hojicha tastes roasted, nutty, smooth and lightly smoky, with notes of cocoa, toasted hazelnut and caramel. It is much less grassy and bitter than matcha.

How do I make an iced hojicha latte?

Whisk 1–2 teaspoons of hojicha powder with a small amount of hot water to make a smooth paste. Pour over ice, add cold milk and sweeten if desired.

Is this hojicha powder sweetened?

No. Hojicha Lab powder is unsweetened and made from 100% roasted Japanese green tea.

Can I use it for baking?

Yes. Hojicha powder is excellent for baking and desserts. Try it in pancakes, overnight oats, tiramisu, cheesecake, cookies, ice cream and brownies.

Is it vegan?

Yes. The powder itself is vegan. For a vegan hojicha latte, use oat, almond, soy or coconut milk.

How many servings are in a 100g pouch?

If you use around 2g per drink, a 100g pouch makes roughly 50 servings.

How should I store it?

Keep your pouch sealed, dry and away from heat, light and strong smells. For the freshest flavour, use within a few months of opening.
